Science is Delicious!

Science is Delicious! Just a few hours to go, and I know youre feeling the stress. Were feeling it too, believe it or not. I have to tell you that the selection process has been exponentially more demanding, rewarding, and yes heartbreaking, than I imagined back in July when it was spoken of in distant, mystical tones. That might be me romanticizing it. In retrospect, the admissions veterans were probably speaking in the IHTFP tone: that mix of dread, wonder and sleep deprivation that MIT students come to embrace. I dont know that Im at the embrace stage of my MIT evolution (I think Im stuck at panicked multitasking learning to walk at ludicrous speed), but I can already see that Im not quite the same person I was before. Im also a lot busier and, like I said, stressed. Luckily the Lab for Chocolate Science has come to the rescue! The Lab offers free hot chocolate in Lobby 10 during finals. And for the purists out there Ill quickly add that yes, it is true hot chocolate (chocolate + milk). What, you think these people are amateurs? They have lab coats! Meteorites from Other Planets

The more we learn about our planet, the more we want samples from other planets. Weve sent men and machines to the Moon and elsewhere, where instruments have examined their surfaces close up. Given the expense of spaceflight, its easier to find Mars and Moon rocks lying on the ground on Earth. We didnt know about these extraplanetary rocks until recently; all we knew was that there were a few particularly strange meteorites. Asteroid Meteorites Almost all meteorites come from the asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter, where thousands of small solid objects orbit the sun. Asteroids are ancient bodies, as old as Earth itself. They have been little altered from the time they formed, except that they have been shattered against other asteroids. The pieces range in size from dust specks to the asteroid Ceres, some 950 kilometers across. Meteorites have been classified into various families, and current theory is that many of these families came from a larger parent body. The eucrite family is one example, now traced to the asteroid Vesta, and research into the dwarf planets is a lively field. It helps that a few of the largest asteroids appear to be undamaged parent bodies. Almost all meteorites fit this model of asteroid parent bodies. Planetary Meteorites A handful of meteorites are very different from the rest: they show chemical and petrological signs of having been part of a full-sized, evolving planet. Their isotopes are unbalanced, among other anomalies. Some are similar to basaltic rocks known on Earth. After we went to the Moon and sent sophisticated instruments to Mars, it became clear where these rare stones come from. These are meteorites created by other meteorites—by asteroids themselves. Asteroid impacts onto Mars and the Moon blasted these rocks into space, where they drifted for many years before falling on Earth. Out of many thousands of meteorites, only a hundred or so are known to be Moon or Mars rocks. You can own a piece for thousands of dollars a gram, or find one yourself. Hunting Extraplanetaries You can look for meteorites in two ways: wait until you see one fall or search for them on the ground. Historically, witnessed falls were the primary means of discovering meteorites, but in recent years people have started looking for them more systematically. Both scientists and amateurs are in the hunt—its a lot like fossil hunting that way. One difference is that many meteorite hunters are willing to give or sell pieces of their finds to science, whereas a fossil cant be sold in pieces so its harder to share. There are two kinds of places on Earth where meteorites are more likely to be found. One is on parts of the Antarctic ice cap where the ice flows together and evaporates in the sun and wind, leaving behind meteorites as a lag deposit. Here scientists have the place to themselves, and the Antarctic Search for Meteorites program (ANSMET) harvests the blue-ice plains every year. Stones from the Moon and Mars have been found there. The other prime meteorite hunting grounds are deserts. The dry conditions tend to preserve stones, and the lack of rain means they are less likely to wash away. In windswept areas, just as in Antarctica, fine material does not bury the meteorites either. Significant finds have come from Australia, Arabia, California, and the Saharan countries. Martian rocks were found in Oman by amateurs in 1999, and the next year a scientific expedition by the University of Bern in Switzerland recovered some 100 meteorites including a Martian shergottite. The government of Oman, which supported the project, got a piece of the stone for the Natural History Museum in Muscat. The university made a point of boasting that this meteorite was the first Mars rock that is fully available to science. Generally, the Saharan meteorite theater is chaotic, with finds going into the private market in direct competition with scientists. Scientists dont need much material, though. Rocks from Elsewhere We have also sent probes to the surface of Venus. Might there be Venus rocks on Earth as well? If there were, we could probably recognize them given the knowledge we have from the Venus landers. But its extremely unlikely: not only is Venus deeper in the Suns gravity well, but its thick atmosphere would muffle all but the very largest impacts. Still, there just might be Venus rocks to be found. And Mercury rocks are not beyond all possibility either—in fact, we might have some in the exceedingly rare angrite meteorites. We need to send a lander to Mercury for ground-truth observations first. The Messenger mission, which is now orbiting Mercury, is already telling us a lot. PS: Just to take things a little farther, consider this: impacts on Earth have undoubtedly knocked Earth rocks into space too. Most probably fell back, melted, as tektites, but some must be sitting on the Moon right now, while others could have landed on Venus and Mars. In fact, in 2005 we found a big iron meteorite on Mars surface—why not Earth stones too? If life really did exist on Mars, as some evidence suggests, it could have traveled there from Earth. Or was it the other way around? Or, indeed, did both come from Venuss early oceans?

The Virginia Beach school district offers programs for pregnant teens to help them become less â€Å"at risk†. Once the teens are in the situation of becoming pregnant, many believe they do not have a choice to continue their education. There are programs such as night classes and centers for pregnant teens available in Virginia Beach for these students. The centers offer free childcare while the parents are in class. This way they do not have to miss school because they have no one to watch the children. The night school has an advanced curriculum to help the students graduate faster. Both programs are good for the teenage parents because it puts them together with others in the same situation. Not only does this put them in a setting with others that can understand what they are going through, it also puts them in an environment where they won’t feel judged by others. Teenage parents may often drop out due to self-esteem issues or lack of help from others. It is very important to both the parents and children that the teens receive a proper education. That is why the programs mentioned are beneficial. They help the teens get past the problems associated with teen pregnancy. They also offer special classes on parenting to help the teens ease into the role of parents. This way they can better handle the transition into parenthood and manage to stay on track. Another great thing about the programs is that they do not cost anything. Many teen parents do not have a lot of money; and any money they have probably goes to doctors and items for the babies/children. The centers and special schools do not charge for admission or childcare. With this burden lifted, teens may feel they do not have to quit school. Just having the childcare is a big plus. Some teens do not get help from others and could not afford an independent daycare. So having a way to have their children being taken care of in a trusted environment is a big deal. There are programs offered by the state that are beneficial to these students as well. Medical programs and supplemental needs programs are offered. The state makes sure the teens and their children have access to doctors, mental health services, family planning services, and drug abuse services (Council on Virginia’s Future, 2012). There are also programs to make sure nutritional needs are met. This is beneficial to students because they can stay healthy and well-nourished enough to remain in school. They also make sure that teens have counseling so they are not overwhelmed by the idea of parenting and finishing school. The programs offered for pregnant teens by Virginia as a state and the city of Virginia Beach are great programs. This is something I actually have personal experience with. I used the night classes to finish school. The night school gave me a chance to graduate. And since the classes did not take up my whole day, I was still able to care for my son. The school years were only as long as an average semester, so it did not take as long to finish school. This way I was able to start a full time job sooner and did not have to sacrifice my education. There is one problem I have found with teen pregnancy programs. The issue of teen pregnancy is something many would rather not mention. People are afraid of bringing attention to the issue or creating influence. Therefore, the programs are not well known. Many only know of them through having to thoroughly research or by hearing from counselors or even peers after they have had time to give up. If the programs were more widely known, the teens would have the advantage to decide to go before completely dropping out. Teen pregnancy does cause a lot of issues when it comes to education. With the help of the schools and centers offered by the city, educational goals can be met. Though it should not be encouraged, the students do not have to be so â€Å"at-risk†. Plans for the clean land pillar includes; protecting and repairing Australias natural landscape and the 20 million trees initiativ e. The clean water pillar plans are to develop community-based projects for practical environmentalism, plan for the Murray-Darling basin and protection of the Great Barrier Reef (Garrick et al. 2012). To protect its heritage, Australia is instilling a new sense of pride in Australias heritage. Through sharing of stories, their heritage is preserved for generations to come. The government has developed a 20-year action plan to ensure Antarctica remains valued, protected and understood. Case Studies of Ecologically Sustainable Development Buildings The Council House 2 in the city of Melbourne is a holistic system with its occupants as participants. Its model promotes a more interactive role between the city and nature as they all depend on each other. The building sends out a statement that Melbourne aims at achieving zero emissions and reducing the energy consumption of commercial buildings by 50 percent. The building seeks to reduce energy consumption and emissions significantly (Rauscher and Momtaz, 2015). The key areas of achieving ecological sustainability in the building include; shower towers, phase change materials, and the air cooling system. It has a water plant that treats and recycles water for reuse. It has a garden that reduces glare and increases ambiance. Finally, an air conditioner that allows all the occupants to enjoy 100 percent fresh air at the same time. The Council House 2 has some significant ecological sustainability development considerations in the following areas; management, energy, water waste emissions, air, transport, and materials. A building users guide was made available to promote the effective and efficient use of the building. The building is naturally cooled at night through night purging, the heat from tenants is absorbed through chilled panels, and general lights levels are kept low (Robinson and Edwards, 2009). Highly energy efficient equipment is used for example LCD monitors to reduce heat and energy emission. During its construction, 80 percent of the waste was recycled. All the staff is provided with recycling facilities for office waste. Lower floors are fitted with bigger windows to reduce heat. Though they have a water mining plant, rain water is also collected and used to the recycled water. National Museum of Australia In the year 2001 Australia's National Museum was opened. Though there were limitations to achieve high ecological sustainability development, the museum continues to develop its ecological performance. Its primary environmental sustainability development considerations include; natural lighting, energy efficient lighting, thermal mass and passive design, materials, water efficiency and people (Beatley and Newman, 2009). Through these considerations, the Museum is promoting ecological sustainability and conservation. The building has skylights and large windows in its hall for penetration of natural light. The exhibition galleries use natural filtered lighting. In most Museums, light takes up a lot of energy and produces a lot of heat too. Australia's National Museum has gone to greater lengths to make sure that it is adhering to the conserving the environment. The lamping configurations have also been changed from 50 W to 35 W lamps. The architects used modernly developed materials to meet the modern layout. Water conservation is also a priority in the building. It used auto flash urinals and dual flush toilets to reduce water wastage. The Museum has effected saving strategies to help in managing the load sharing across the whole plant. Brindabella Circuit Located next to Canberra airport, Brindabella Circuit has been built to conserve the ecological environment. The building is energy efficient. It is built to reticulate heating and cooling. Through active chilled beams, the building can control the temperature of its air. The building has an automatic system that controls the perimeter lighting. The system controls the amount of light produced during the day and can turn off lights if its motion sensors do not detect anyone around. Brindabella Circuit saves incredible volumes of water per year. Its water saving strategies lead to 40 percent or more reduction in water consumption (Pemberton and Searle, 2016). They also collect rain water which is added to the whole system. The building has urinals that do not use water and sensor controlled water taps. Its shower heads use only 5 Amperes. All water used is recycled and used again. Brindabella Circuit is fitted with a general exhaust riser. Heat emitted from printers, photocopiers and other office equipment is collected and exhausted. It has lower noise levels due to insulation and double glazing. Most of the materials used in its construction were recycled or reused especially steel and timber. The waste collected during its construction was reused and recycled. Workstations have recyclable and non-recyclable bins (Xia et al, 2015). The refrigerants used have no ozone depletion potential. The building has created social amenities such as a secured and enclosed bike storage. The staff have a changing room located next to the motorcycle store. Urban Form, Community and the Government The urban form, community, and the federal government have different roles to play in the achievement of ecological sustainability development of Australia. The government on itself is very committed to restoring natural processes to a better status, manage resources and develop and adhere to policies. Both three parties are important in managing ecological resources and developing policies. Urban form, community, and the government have to strike a rapport and share ideas and offer each other support consistently. For example, the government starts projects such as Solar Towns and renewing energy. These programs are community-based and involve cultural form. The government and the communities have the right attitude that helps them coordinate such initiatives to improve local environments and manage resources well. In developing policies, the community supports the government entirely. The enactment of two acts namely; the Environmental Protection Act and Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act of 1994 and 1999 respectively received huge support from most Australians (Newton, 2008). These three parties seem to be very different, but it is the relationship they build between themselves and the attitude and commitment they show towards these projects that will help them achieve them manage resources well. Conclusion There is still much work to be done in environmental management and planning in Australia. The government should continue to lead from the front. All the stakeholders in all sectors affected have to be accountable for all their actions. The projects and initiatives the government is starting up such as Solar Town and green cities are very vital for achieving ecologically sustainable development for a stronger Australia (Xia et al, 2015). The government should encourage communities to visit the National Museum where they will gather a lot of information concerning their heritage, culture, and arts. In doing this, Australia shall have secured the future of coming generations and preserve their roots. Businesses have a responsibility of embracing green technology. Through using energy efficient building materials, recycling and reusing materials, using renewable energy and reducing water consumption then the ecologically sustainable future for Australia is secured. Recommendations The government should continue releasing and sourcing for funds to fuel the initiatives it started. To obtain renewable energy targets it has to encourage more generation of electricity from sustainable and renewable sources. Australia should develop and implement policies to enable it to achieve ecological sustainability development. Some policies should promote the use of energy-efficient materials, reusing and recycling materials such as steel, tapping rain water, reducing water consumption and managing the ecological resources that support life (Arthuson, 2012). To ensure the well-being of communities, more initiatives and training needs to be done to community members for the proper management of ecological resources. Strict laws and costlier fines need to develop. Any individual found guilty of breaking these environmental conservation laws have to be punished under the law. Some policies have to be made into laws with the goal of creating green cities to become a reality. It s hould be made compulsory for architects to use energy efficient materials. The government should seek to build partnerships with non-governmental organizations to in environmental management and planning in Australia. Recognizing best performers especially buildings that help conserve the environment and giving the six star ratings is a good method but what about the buildings that have not embraced the technology yet? The government and other stakeholders have to bring every Australian on board for this process to be a success. W. E. B. Du Bois believes that everyone should be fully educated for a change in the life of Americans. In 1903 education was much different than it is now, but there are still a few things that we struggle with that they did. Race, and the desire to learn are the main elements of why then and now we can?t live a more sophisticated life. Education is clearly important to Du Bois and believing that every man is equal and deserves the same in learning. A formal education calls sometimes for more success, money, and overall better living. The more people that have an education, I believe, can realize what is wrong with the world and learn of the race struggle in it. I believe Du Bois feels the same. Education can take an individual and make that individual realize what he/she is missing out on, and the differences we have in the world. The student will learn of past and present race situations and hopefully make that individual help with the cause. The fight against race in 1903 has gotten a little bit better, but not as well as Du Bois would have hoped. We allow different races to enjoy all the same things and share the same education, unfortunately there are still people that don?t agree with sharing these things with a different colored person. Du Bois believes that education could help an individual gain respect for the problems at hand and try to fight for equality. Achieving the fight against race, would allow everyone?s hate for other colored people?s life to go away and all of us be friends, well maybe. Like I?ve stated before, education has moved us a little farther with the battle, but not everyone is educated. Probably half of the kids that start school drop out becau se they don?t have the drive, or they just hate being educated because they?re stuck up their own butt?s. Du bois is trying to find a reason to get people to be motivated about learning, but is very hard when people just want mediocre jobs. How do you feel when someone tells you, ?Good Job!? I bet you feel really good about yourself and you keep doing that good thing, which could lead into several good things. Do you feel a sense of achievement? If all leadership roles could learn to use constructive criticism, instead of bashing and picking little things. This applies to schooling, and why I believe most kids drop out, and we have so much poor families. If we could learn to find positive things in everything and not little things, because nobody wants to hear they?re a failure. When you feel you?ve achieved something in school, like getting an ?A? on a test or paper, you keep that paper in mind and keep doing well. When a teacher in a higher educative stance pulls you in front of the class and makes fun of your test or paper, it?ll put you down right? Well Du Bois definitely doesn?t want that to happen, he wants an individual to feel achievement and feel like they can do good. The experience of life without an education can be very tough on you and your family. Working a minimum wage job, raising two kids, and having to pay bills can probably be very tough. When having a college degree, higher paying jobs are more likely and a better way of living. You have more of a variety of what you can do, and will get more opportunities than someone with just a GED. People with some kind of college degree can earn over a million more dollars in a lifetime than a person with just a GED. In today?s economy, you need to have a higher education, or you won?t get high paying jobs. Everyone can go on to college and make a better life for themselves, they just have to have drive and determination. West Point Admissions Requirements and Deadlines All West Point applicants must meet the following personal qualifications before applying: Be at least 17 but not older than 22 on July 1 of the year they enter West Point Not be married Not be pregnant Not be legally responsible for support of any children Be in good physical and mental health Pass a medical exam (DODMERB) Above average strength, agility, and endurance A strong performance on the West Point Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) West Point provides a candidate questionnaire if you have any questions about your eligibility based on these requirements. In addition, all applicants must have a Social Security number at the time of their application. West Point also requires that applicants receive a nomination to attend. You can get either a congressional nomination or a service-connected nomination. There are only a few approved sources of congressional nominations: Your representative in Congress Your US senators The Vice President of the United States Delegates to the House of Representatives from Washington, D.C., the Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands The Governor of Puerto Rico The Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico The Secretary of the Army The following applicants have what are known as service-connected nominations, which means that the applicant has a connection to someone in the US military. Sons and Daughters of "career military personnel" (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard) Members of Regular Army and Reserve Components (Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard) Sons and Daughters of Deceased or Disabled Armed Forces Veterans Sons and Daughters of Medal of Honor Recipients Army Junior and Senior ROTC Programs and Honor ROTC Units of Other Services There are specific requirements to being service-connected, so make sure you check them out on West Point’s website. West Point applicants are also required to submit the following: High school academic transcripts SAT or ACT scores SAT or ACT writing scores 4 letters of recommendation West Point application essay What GPA Do I Need to Get Into West Point? West Point is very competitive to get accepted to. West Point only accepts 10 students out of every 100 applicants, which means that you need to have a stellar application to be considered. One of the most important factors on your application is your GPA. While West Point doesn’t have a minimum GPA requirement, you can look at the average accepted GPA of West Point students to see what you need. The average GPA of admitted West Point applicants is 3.74. You’ll want to at least meet this GPA to apply. Your application will look even better if it’s higher than the average. That means you’ll need mainly A’s (you can have a few B’s peppered in) to achieve this GPA. Since West Point values the academic preparedness of its applicants, you can also demonstrate how serious you are as a student by taking AP, IB, honors, or other advanced classes. If your grades aren’t perfect, you can compensate with high standardized test scores. What Test Scores Do I Need to Get Into West Point? West Point applicants traditionally have competitive standardized test scores. Just as with GPA, you’ll ideally want to meet, if not exceed, the average standardized test scores of West Point’s admitted applicants. The average SAT composite score for West Point admitted applicants is 1340 (on the 1600 point scale). West Point does something known as â€Å"Highest Section† scoring. That means they consider your highest scores on each section. So, for instance, if you took the SAT in May 2018 and earned a 690 on Reading and a 740 on Math, then took it again in August and earned a 770 on Reading and a 700 on Math, West Point will take the highest score on each section (in this case, 770 and 740). That means it’s in your best interest to take the SAT at least twice before applying to West Point - you can’t hurt your score by going down the second time you take the test. The average ACT score for West Point admitted applicants is 28. West Point doesn’t indicate whether it also takes your highest score on each section for the ACT. You’re also required to take the writing section on both the SAT and ACT. West Point doesn’t require any SAT subject tests. How to Write Your West Point Application Essays West Point requires that you submit an essay as part of your statement. The essay topic changes yearly and you only get access to the prompt after confirming your eligibility via birthdate and Social Security number, so I can’t offer specific information on the prompt for this year. However, you’ll likely also have to write an essay as part of the nomination process so that your representative, senator, or the Vice President can get to know you. While there’s no specific formula for what you need to write to get nominated by your congressional representative, successful essays typically do the following: #1: Clearly Demonstrate Interest in West Point and the US military Deciding to go to West Point is a big choice - one that will affect the rest of your life, even beyond graduation. Your essay should indicate why you want to make a commitment to West Point and the military. You need to have clear, compelling reasons. #2: Highlight Your Qualifications for Going to West Point It's extremely competitive to get into West Point. Your representatives will be asked to write multiple letters, so the competition really starts with this letter. You need to show why you deserve their recommendation. Your representative won't have your full West Point application, so you'll need to highlight your academic and extracurricular qualifications to them. #3: Write Clearly and Double-Check for Errors It should go without saying, but your letters should be well-written and error-free. Ask someone to proofread your work and get (at least) a second opinion on the content. so you can be sure you're making a compelling case for why you need a letter of recommendation. 3 Tips for How to Get Into West Point Getting into West Point is difficult, but not impossible. Here are some tips for successfully being accepted at the US Military Academy. #1: Start the Process Early West Point has unique application requirements. Among them, a nomination from an important political representative. You need to build in time to reach out to these representatives and establish a relationship before submitting your application. You also have to pass a physical fitness test. That’s not even to say anything about the other application requirements, such as taking the SATs and writing your West Point essay. West Point recommends that students start their applications as early as possible - often, mid-way through their junior year. If you wait too long, you won’t be able to get all of the application pieces together in time. #2: Know the Application Requirements West Point has unique application requirements. If you’re missing any one of them, your application won’t even be considered. Make sure you familiarize yourself with these requirements before submitting. Otherwise, you’ll waste your time. #3: Demonstrate Why West Point Is Right For You West Point is not like most other colleges and universities. You need to prove that it’s the right opportunity for you, which means thinking about more than just the stellar education you’ll receive. You need to show that being a part of the military is something important to you, too, and that you’re committed to this career path. I’ve gotten the impression that she is an intelligent girl because she fits the stereotype. But today, people have forgotten their religion. They feel shame of acting upon it. They have restless nights and joyless life because they do not follow their religion. A Raisin in the Sun vs. Julius Caesar Essay

In William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun themes, symbols, and characters can be compared. Both A Raisin in the Sun and Julius Caesar were written for the stage; therefore their characters become more obvious and more thoroughly portrayed than in a book, for example. Even though, these works were written by far different authors and in different centuries their similarities and differences are evident. In both A Raisin in the Sun and Julius Caesar themes, symbols, and character development are consistent. Comparing character development in Julius Caesar and A Raisin in the Sun is beneficial in learning more about each and every character. One of the major characters in A Raisin in the Sun is Mama; a character she can be compared to in Julius Caesar is Calpurnia. Despite Mama has a bigger role in Hansberry’s work and Calpurnia’s role in Shakespeare’s work is not as powerful as Mama, similarities are still evi dent. One way they are similar is in their authority over one person or a few people in general, their families to be more specific. In A Raisin in the Sun, Mama has a strong opinion regarding her beliefs. She stands up for them and stresses respect. Mama is also the head of the Younger household. She reminds everyone who is living with her the difference between right and wrong. However, Mama seems to be a bit more concerned with what Walter is always doing. Walter is her eldest son. In the same way, Calpurnia stresses what she believes in. Similar to how Mama watches out for her son Walter, Calpurnia tries to warn her husband, Julius Caesar, against evil and something awful that has a potential of happening. Mama shows her authority over Walter when she gives him the responsibility of putting away a share of the money, â€Å"Listen to me, son. I say I been wrong, son. That I been doing to you what the rest of the world been doing to you. (She turns of the radio) Walter—(She stops and he looks up slowly at her and she meets his eyes pleadingly) What you ain’t never understood is that I ain’t got nothing, don’t own nothing ain’t never really wanted nothing that wasn’t for you. There ain’t nothing as precious to me†¦There ain’t nothing worth holding on  to, money, dreams, nothing else—if it means—if it means it’s going to destroy my boy. (She takes an envelope out of her handbag and puts it in front of him and he watches her without speaking or moving) I paid the man thirty-five hundred down on the house. That leaves sixty-five hundred dollars. Monday morning I want you to take this money and take three thousand and put it in a savings account for Beneatha’s medical schooling. The rest you put in a checking account—with your name on it. And from now on any penny that come out of it or go in it is for you to look after. For you to decide. (She drops her hands a little helplessly) It ain’t much, but it’s all I got in the wor ld and I’m putting it in your hands. I’m telling you to be the head of this family from now on like you supposed to be† (Hansberry 106-107). In a similar way Calpurnia takes authority over Julius Caesar, â€Å"Alas my lord, your wisdom is consumed in confidence. Do not go forth to-day; call it my fear that keeps you in the house, and not your own. We’ll send Mark Antony to the senate-house; and he shall say you are not well to-day; let me, upon my knee, prevail in this† (Shakespeare 2.2). Both Calpurnia and Mama take authority over someone. Due to the fact that both tasks were not taken seriously both Walter and Caesar run into turmoil later in the literary work. In Walter’s case, he doesn’t do as Mama says and loses his and Beneatha’s money as well as people’s trust in him (Hansberry 127-128). In Caesar’s case, him not staying home and returning to the senate against his wife’s will, Caesar is greeted with his death (Shakespeare 3.1). In both works of literature, symbolism is commonly used. Some of the symbols used in A Raisin in the Sun are Mama’s plant, Beneatha’s hair, and the check Mama receives after her husband dies. In Raisin in the Sun, Mama’s plant represents her dreams and the rest of her family’s dreams. A result of this would be Mama always making sure to take extra care of her plant and to nourish it well. On the other hand, Mama’s check represents all of the hard work that her husband achieved and how hard he had to work to actually obtain that amount of money. Beneatha’s hair symbolizes the assimilationist beliefs of the time and how people become inferior to the dominant race. When Beneatha returns her hair to its natural state it symbolizes that she is against common assimilation beliefs. The symbolism of her hair is evident in a conversation between her and Asagai, â€Å"’(Coming to her at the mirror) I shall have to teach you how to drape it properly. (He flings the material  about her for the moment and stands back to look at her) Ah—Oh-pay-gay-day, oh-gaha-mu-shay. (A Yoruba exclamation for admiration) You wear it well†¦very well†¦mutilated hair and all.’ ‘(Turning suddenly) My hair—what’s wrong with my hair?’ ‘(Shrugging) Were you born with it like that?’ ‘(Reaching up to touch it) No†¦of course not. (She looks back to the mirror, disturbed)’ ‘(Smiling) How then?’ ‘You know perfectly well how†¦as crinkly as yours†¦that’s how’† (Hansberry 61-62). The symbols used in Julius Caesar are omens, pain, and the conspirators bathing in Caesar’s blood. In Julius Caesar, omens symbolize evil and warn people against evil and bad things that could happen, possibly fatal things. By the conspirators bathing or washing their hands in Caesar’s blood they are symbolizing that they are taking responsibility for ridding Rome of its ‘terrible’ leader. Portia, Brutus’s wife, uses the symbol of pain to show how much she loves Brutus, that she is loyal to him, and he can trust her. Portia harshly kills herself by swallowing hot coals because Brutus refuses to share anything with her, â€Å"No man bears sorrow better. That tidings came. With this she fell distract and, her attendants absent, swallo’d fire (Shakespeare 4.3 147, 155-156). By using symbolism Hansberry and Shakespeare made their readers and audience think with depth and understanding. In A Raisin in the Sun, several themes are covered throughout the play; the same goes for Julius Caesar. Even though there are many themes in these works of literature there are two that stand out and can be compared. The themes that are similar between A Raisin in the Sun and Julius Caesar are pride and the role of men and women in society and the house. In A Raisin in the Sun pride is theme because the Younger family doesn’t have much but they have their pride. Throughout the play their pride is tested but they never hesitate to speak their minds. When Mama buys a house in a white neighborhood they are a bit hesitant at first but are happy in the end. They show their pride concerning this situation when a representative from Clybourne Park comes and asks them to sell the house back but in the end they don’t and kick Linder out of their house. Pride is very evident in the conversation between Walter, Linder, and Ruth, â€Å"’(Putting on his glasses and drawing a form out of the briefcase) Our association is prepared, through the collective effort of our people, to buy the house from you at a financial gain to your family.’ ‘Lord have mercy, ain’t this the living gall!’ ‘All right, you through?’ ‘Well, I want to give  you the exact terms of the financial arrangement—’ ‘We don’t want to hear no exact terms of no arrangements. I want to know if you got any more to tell us ‘bout getting together?’ ‘(Taking off his glasses) Well—I don’t suppose that you feel†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ ‘Never mind how I feel—you got any more to say ‘bout how people ought to sit down and talk to each other? †¦ Get out of my house, man. (He turns his back and walks to the door) (Hansberry 118-119). Britain Between the Wars Essay

The armistice came into effect at 11.00am on 11th November 1918 and effectively brought the fighting on the Western Front to a close. In more than four years of war Britain and the Empire had lost more than 750,000 dead in France and Flanders, with many times that wounded and sick. The political and social life were ruined not only by the war, but also by the severe crises and by the dividing of the society into classes. The 1920’s and 1930’s were unhappy decades for most of the people in Britain. The Liberal Lloyd George enjoyed wide support by the Conservative party and duly formed a new coalition government. He immediately transformed the British war effort, taking firm control of both military and domestic policy. A general election the first for 8 years was held in December 1918. This election was often called â€Å"the coupon election†. Conservative leader Bonar Law identified candidates who agreed to support them with a letter of endorsement, signed by both, and known as a â€Å"coupon†. Coupons were issued to 159 Liberal candidates and 364 Conservatives though in some cases, they were rejected. This election are also considered the first universal elections in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, in which for the first time the majority of poorer British and Catholic Irish adults were allowed to vote for Parliament. The decision of Lloyd George to create a coalition between the Liberal and Conservative party hardened the divisions within the Liberal party and after the election the division of the Liberal party was even deepened. In 1920’s the Labour party succeeded in overtaking the Liberal party and establishing itself as one of the country’s two main political parties. By the end of 1921 unemployment has risen beyond 2 million. There were several reasons for the decline in industry after the First World War. Structural weaknesses in the British economy meant a disproportionate number of jobs were in the traditional industries. A lack of pre-war technological developments and post war competition damaged the economy and the new industries which emerged employed fewer people. At the same time Britain began to lose her overseas markets due to strong foreign competition. A committee on unemployment was set up in 1920 and recommended public works schemes to ease unemployment, this led to the establishment of the Unemployment Grants Committee. The government wished, also, to return to the gold standard, a move which would have required cuts in public spending. In Unemployment Insurance Act 1920 extended unemployment benefits to cover all workers who earned less than  £250. The â€Å"Seeking Work Test† was introduced in 1921, it stated to receive full unemployment benefit there had to be evidence the recipient was looking for work. The Addison Act after Dr. Christopher Addison, the then Minister for Housing was passed to allow the building of new houses after the First World War, and marked the start of a long 20th century tradition of state-owned housing, which would much later evolve into council estates. Education Act or know as Fisher Act was enacted in the 1918, it extended educational provision, increased the powers and duties of the Board of Education, raised the school leaving age from 12 to 14 and gave all young workers right of access to day release education. (The raising of the leaving age was not immediately implemented, however, and had to wait until the 1921 Act). Other features of the 1918 Education Act included the provision of ancillary services (medical inspection, nursery schools, centres for pupils with special needs, etc.).

Developmental psychology is an area of research dedicated to the understanding of child-development. Throughout history many theories have been used to attempt to explain the complex process. Two of those theorists, Freud and Erikson, were instrumental in creating a foundation for child-psychology to build on. From a Freudian perspective, human development is centered on psychosexual theory. Psychosexual theory indicates that maturation of the sex drives underlies stages of personality development. Alternatively, Erikson is considered a neo-freudian scholar who developed psychosocial theory. In Erikson models there are eight major conflicts that occur during the course of an individual’s life. Developmental psychology is an area of†¦show more content†¦It allows an individual to regulate standards, embrace moral values and decides whether or not the ego has implemented problem-solving strategies that are acceptable (Shaffer et al, 2010; Wedding Corsini, 2014). Ultimately, Freud believed that sex was the most important instinct influencing personality and any mental disturbance revolved around sexual conflicts that were suppressed from childhood. Furthermore, Freud believed that parents permitting too much or too little gratification of sexual needs led to a fixation on that activity throughout their lifetime (Shaffer et al., 2010). This fixation can eventually lead to a regression in behaviour. Regression can determine whether or not the behaviour is psychopathological in nature depending on intensity and changes within their personality (Kerig Wenar, 2006; Lothane, 2006). Freud created five stages of psychosexual development that includes the oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital phases. The oral stage begins at birth and lasts until approximately age one. Throughout the first phase, Freud believed that, the sex instinct was centered on the mouth. Often infants derive pleasure from oral activities such as chewing, sucking, biting, or feeding activities.
